High Blood Pressure and Amlodipine Besylate Side Effects

If you have high blood pressure you doctor may have prescribed Amlodipine. Amlodipine is a prescription drug that blocks calcium channels inside of smooth muscle cells of the coronary arteries as well as other arteries. This prevents smooth muscles from contracting allowing the muscle cells to relax allowing for greater blood flow lowering blood pressure and reducing chest pain (angina).

Common Amlodipine Besylate Side Effects include: drowsiness, stomach pain, skin flushing, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, heart palpitations and swelling due to water retention. Less common Amlodipine Besylate Side Effects include: weight gain, anxiety and depression, high blood sugar levels, low blood pressure, heart arrhythmias, tremor, back pain, tinnitus, hot flashes, dry mouth, insomnia, thirst, constipation and/or diarrhea and sexual dysfunction.

Make sure your doctor knows your medical history so tell him/her if you have heart problems or aortic stenosis, liver dysfunction, pregnant or trying to get pregnant, nursing or have any allergies to foods, drugs, dyes or preservatives. This can help prevent any adverse side effects from occurring. Make sure you don't overdose with this medication. If you forget to take a dose wait until you next dosage time but do not double up on your dose. If you think you have overdosed, you need to call the poison control center and/or go to the emergency room immediately. Remember, this medication was prescribed to you. Do not give it to anyone else.

Amlodipine Besylate Side Effects have known to worsen when taken with other medications. This is true of herbals and dietary supplements, local or general anesthetics, other medications for high blood pressure (hypertension), prostate medications, an rifampin (treats tuberculosis and meningitis).

Due to Amlodipine Besylate Side effects you will need to have regular check ups with your healthcare provider. Your blood pressure and heart rate should be checked at regular intervals. Some of this you can do at your local pharmacy or if you can do it at home if you have your own equipment. Recall, that Amlodipine Besylate Side Effects include drowsiness and dizziness. Make sure not to drive or operate machinery until you know how Amlodipine affects you. You should avoid alcoholic beverages because this will make you drowsier and perhaps more dizzy.

When terminating the use of Amlodipine you may have to contend with further Amlodipine Besylate Side Effects. Make sure you don't suddenly stop taking this drug because there could be severe adverse side effects. Your doctor will help you gradually lower your dose until you can stop taking it.

There are some individuals who may be allergic to this drug or the capsule around it. Allergic reactions generally present with skin rashes, itching, possible hives, swelling of the face, lips or tongue and respiratory failure. You could go into anaphylactic shock.
