Is it possible that zero calorie foods exist? That's a tricky question. Some food manufacturers have combined different foods and additives to create what look like zero calorie foods. In actuality, this is not really possible. There has to be some calories present. On the other hand, some people believe that you can have foods that actually create a calorie deficit when the body is digesting, absorbing and metabolizing them. It seems that the only true zero calorie foods would be water and diet soda. That is to say the only naturally occurring foods. Is water even thought of as a food?
We know that water is an important part of any diet. You not only need it to survive but it helps fill you up when you are hungry while dieting. Water is also versatile in how it can be served. You can serve it as a liquid hot or cold, ice as a solid form and of course slush. This contributes zero calories to your diet.
Perhaps thinking of taking in diet soda? After all the label says it has zero calories. Is it really a member of the zero calorie foods? These are generally sweetened with artificial sweeteners however, safety issues have been brought to light. Some artificial sweeteners have been demonstrated to cause cancer and alter metabolism in an unsafe way.
What about negative calorie foods? Are they zero calorie foods? These are fruits and vegetables that are supposed to have calories when they are consumed but once they are digested created a negative calorie balance. The idea behind this is that these foods take more energy to digest than they carry in their nutritional content. This would mean you expend more energy then you took in creating a negative energy state which is actually less than zero calorie foods. Nevertheless, there is no current scientific evidence supporting this at this time. But, perhaps it is possible.
Well, if you think such zero calorie foods exist then you should be able to eat the foods listed below without fear. Just remember, in terms of our imaginary zero calorie foods, don't add anything to them to destroy the negative effect. Negative calorie fruits include: apples, cranberries, grapefruit, lemon, mango, orange, papaya, pineapple, raspberries, strawberries and tangerines. Some of the vegetables that belong to the negative or zero calorie foods include: asparagus, beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrot, cauliflower, celery, cucumber, dandelion, endive, zucchini, onion and garlic to mention a few.
Whether you attempt to go on a zero calorie foods type of diet keep in mind you should talk with your healthcare provider first. You still need to have calories in your diet to run your overall metabolism. You need to take in enough food along with supplementation to supply your vitamin, mineral and other nutrients to keep everything going.
If you believe in a zero calorie foods diet, more power to you. But, as dieting can be difficult make sure you don't end of starving yourself. Make sure you take things in moderation day by day.
