Crave microwave popcorn with butter? Don’t eat it. In 2007, a new type of lung cancer reached the medical books – popcorn lung. It’s caused by the artificial butter flavor put in many microwaveable popcorn pouches. This butter flavor contains a chemical called diacetyl, which can cause lung cancer. People most susceptible to popcorn lung were workers in popcorn factories. There have only been few cases of consumers getting it. But why take the chance? Make popcorn on the stove with organic kernels and add your own salt and melted butter. Real melted butter is free of diacetyl.
